JEAN RIM 임연진 b.1975 USAJean Rim은 한국계 미국인 아티스트로 뉴욕 파슨스 디자인 스쿨를 졸업하고 센프란시스코 아트 인스티튜트에서 수학했다. 현재는 뉴욕 브루클린에 거주하며 한국과 미국을 오가며 완성한 활동을 하고 있다. 작가는 페인트를 무늬로 조각한다. 그녀의 예술적 조각과정은 자연에서 발견되는 유기적이고 반복적인 배열에서 영감을 끌어낸다. 작가의 작품 세계는 한국의 나전칠기, 불교 만다라와 신성한 후광, 그리고 한스 크리스티안 안데르센의 동화 『인어공주』의 주인공에서 영감을 받았다. YIN(음)은 한국인들이 나무를 조각하기 전에 직관적인 패턴을 반복해서 깍아내고 여러 층의 색상을 입히는 것에서 영감을 얻어 그녀만의 해석으로 완성하였다.YANG(양)은 YIN(음) 시리즈로 조각된 비트들을 모아 놓은 일련의 그림들이다. 이것은 자개조각들을 모아 옻칠한 표면에 상감하는 나전칠기에서 영감을 받았다. Jean Rim is a Korean American artist who graduated from the Parsons School of Design in New York and studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. She currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, and divides her time between Korea and the United States. The artist sculpts paint into patterns, drawing inspiration from the organic and repetitive arrangements found in nature. Her artistic world is influenced by Korean mother of pearl inlay, Buddhist mandalas and sacred halos, as well as the protagonist of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Little Mermaid.The YIN series is inspired by the traditional Korean practice of carving intuitive patterns into wood before layering colors. This series represents the artist's unique interpretation of this technique.The YANG series consists of a collection of pieces assembled from the sculpted bits of the YIN series. This collection is inspired by Korean mother-of-pearl inlay, where pieces of mother-of-pearl are set into lacquered surfaces.
